Mouretsu Pirates 21 – Reputation is what you make of it

It has been hinted upon since the very beginning of the series, but at last we see concrete proof that despite her apparent easy life, Marika is being constantly watched. But more than this, we see that her life is in fact almost always in constant danger, with numerous groups envious of her current position. This helps to demonstrate that while Marika may be famous and the captain of what we are told is a very well known pirate ship, the world of pirates is not quite as rosy as their performances might suggest. Last weeks episode had an excellent example, with numerous powerful individuals, apparently from Umi no Akeboshi talking about their current protection deal involving Marika. Read more of this post

Mouretsu Pirates 20 – Ride the winds of change

Throughout this series we have seen Marika come across various problems and issues, many of them are large, but there are also those of a smaller, more personal nature. When it came to the larger problems, Marika could rely on her friends and crew to do what was necessary in order to overcome whatever challenge lay ahead. However, for the more personal issues, she only has herself to work out what is necessary and what she needs to do. This week once again presented Marika with something new to think about, not a problem per se, but still something incredibly important and essential to her life as a pirate. Read more of this post

Mouretsu Pirates 19 – Bonds and Friendship

Throughout this series various characters have gathered around Marika, she is an excellent captain with a certain charm and charisma that draws everyone to her, be they friend or foe. But, while she may be able to make on the spot decisions, along with having an excellent tactical mind, she is not perfect, far from it in fact. While she may be brilliant at bringing the best out of her crew, Marika has a terrible tendency to try and do things on her own. This is perhaps related to her wish to stand shoulder to shoulder with her mother Ririka as someone who is strong, capable and kind, unfortunately this can lead to trouble and the consequences that follow. Mouretsu Pirates 18 – Pirates as outlaws

Two weeks ago I talked about and explored the idea of pirates as performers, bringing a sense of the carnivalesque to peoples lives. They put on a show for rich passengers on cruise liners in order to maintain their position within society. There is also the notion that in order to keep their Letter of Marque pirates need to keep putting on these shows, and are in a sense more akin to travelling performers than rogues or outlaws. Moutetsu Pirates 15 – Beware princesses bearing parfaits

One thing that I have always enjoyed about Mouretsu Pirates is its pace – rather than throwing the cast into what may appear to be a never-ending series of missions, each one crazier than the last – this show has opted for a far calmer approach, choosing instead to build upon what has come before with plot and character development rather than big flashy effects. This episode is no except, instead of thrusting our stand-in Bentenmaru crew into the fray and effectively force them into a piracy job, this episode acts as a transition, allowing the makeshift crew to get used to their new roles, along with the ship. Mouretsu Pirates 13 – One adventure ends, another begins

Well, the hunt for the Gold Ghost ship is finally over and a sense of normality has returned to the crew of the Bentenmaru and Marika, well almost. To think that Gruier would send Marika a message claiming that Serenity is in more danger than ever – of course it isn’t, and she simply uses that excuse to bring the Bentenmaru back in order to present Marika with a medal. This episode was however quite an interesting one, being more slice-of-life than the recent arc, and with a similar feel to the very first episodes. It was a chance for the characters to take stock of what has happened and plan for their future. It was also a handy way of tying up certain loose plot points from the Ghost Ship arc, although it has to be said that there still remains many questions left unanswered. Read more of this post

Mouretsu Pirates 12 – Everything works out in the end if you’re a pirate

Thus ends the first major arc of Mouretsu pirates, and what an arc it was, full of political conspiracies, mysteries, ghost ships, and storms in space. It was an excellent end, to what has been an excellent arc – one that demonstrated the abilities of Marika as the Bentenmaru’s captain, along with the mutual trust that her and her crew share. The ghost ship was even more magnificent, and amazing on the inside than it was outside, with full cities, cryogenic labs, and large storage spaces for the wealth and culture of Serenity. It did however hide a far darker, but also far more surprising and amazing secret. Read more of this post
