Twelve Days of Anime 2013 – The brilliance of Kusaribe Hakaze and Fuwa Aika

It is nigh impossible to choose between Kusaribe Hakaze and Fuwa Aika, they are both exceptionally strong, capable, and eccentric characters with their own problems and ways of dealing with them. Aika basically has the entire cast wrapped around her little finger throughout the entire series, whereas Hakaze is just a brilliant magician who ends up head-over-heels in love with Yoshino. While Mahiro and Yoshino are the main focus for much of the series, with the story following them on their quest to find who killed Aika, it is really a combination of Aika and Hakaze who move the narrative forwards. The memories of Aika and her ability to manipulate Yoshino and Mahiro are a constant presence, coupled with Hakaze’s attempts to escape her island captivity remain central to the story. It isnt until the second half however that we see these characters really come alive – slightly ironic since Aika spends most of the series dead – it is in the second half that Hakaze goes from haughty princess, to head-over-hells in love with Yoshino. While Aika is easily one of the best characters Hana Kanazawa has ever played, I personally loved watching Hakaze switch between madly in love, to worrying about whether she was the individual behind Aika’s death. But they are really just such brilliant characters, it’s hard to choose between them in the end.
