Sakamichi no Apollon – A love letter to jazz

There is something truly evocative about music, it has an ability to conjure up images of the past, inspire us and drive out imaginations. While not all music can have the same effect on us, there is still something about the medium itself that continues to move people’s hearts and minds, creating new friendships, reaffirming old ones and creating strong and lasting links between individuals and groups. Sakamichi no Apollon captures this beauty almost perfectly, it demonstrates that no matter what differences there may be between people there will always by the commonality of music, it also touched me in quite a deep and specific way, largely because of the jazz theme. Senki Zesshou Symphogear 01 – First Impressions

Well Senki Zesshou Symphogear certainly started with a bang, not one, but two major character deaths within the first 10 minutes. Something a little unusual for a show that you could be forgiven for mistaking as a simple cute magical girls sing to kill stuff show. This is another series based around music defeating an unknown menace, much like Rahxephon and of course the ever-present Macross franchise.

Heavy Metal and musical composition

Thought that this post would be about something slightly different from the last few.

To start off let me say that I am a big fan of different kinds of music and genres, listening to rock, heavy metal, classical, bluegrass, folk, jazz, blues, world music (more accurately traditional music from different countries) etc. But what has interested me recently is the musical talent that is often lost when playing certain forms of heavy metal.
