Emma A Victorian Romance – Love and Heartbreak in Victorian England

shot0081

Emma: A Victorian Romance (Eikoku Koi Monogatari Emma) is a beautifully realised romantic story set in Victorian England and based upon the manga ‘Emma’ by artists Mori Kaoru. Eikoku Koi Monogatari Emma is a classic romantic story about two people from different social backgrounds who fall in love and must struggle against society to be together. It has been used before, and in this particular case it is the story of the romance between William Jones, the eldest son of a wealthy merchant family attempting to break into the gentry class, and Emma, a poor, yet beautiful maid. Emma is a wonderful story, with animation that is muted, but also highly detailed and brilliant to look at, coupled with a truly wonderful story that is emotional, heart-rending, and a joy to watch makes for one of my favourite anime series.

Amagami SS+ 03 – Rihoko, innocence, and mischievous university students

The major problem with the Rihoko’s arc from season one was the ending, it was never a romantic arc, and Rihoko unfortunately ended up in the terror known as the ‘fiend zone’. It was a disappointing arc for me, since, while Rihoko isn’t my favourite heroine, she is great fun to watch. And I hoped that Rihoko can finally get Junichi’s attention, thus leading to a romantic and wonderful ending. Unfortunately the episode didn’t start in the right direction, with Rihoko still firmly in said friend zone, however there are a few glimmers of hope.

Amagami SS+ 02 – The wonderfully varied faces of Tsukasa and a shed

Tsukasa sees through Noriko’s plan quite easily as it turns out, and Junichi even gets a nice little reward for falling into her trap so easily.  Tsukasa drags Junichi off by his tie in a classic piece of female dominance, dragging him to what should now be the infamous Amagami shed of sexy brilliance from the original Haruka arc. Tsukasa was unbelievably forceful in this episode, being the one to force kisses on Junichi and basically being the badass Tsukasa that we all know and love. Makes me wonder though how the marriage that we all know happened plays out, since she is clearly not above using forceful tactics to get what she wants from Junichi.

Papa no Iukoto wo Kikinasai – roughly translated as ‘listen to me girls, I am your father’ – is a new anime that deals with the idea of family and what it means to be one. The first episodes brought us some nice ideas on what it means to be a family, along with ideas of friendship and some fanservice.
